The story of Laila Atshan
Laila Atshan, a Staff Counselor at UNICEF, shares her inspiring story of inclusion and empowerment, marking this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Laila Atshan is a Palestinian therapist who works as Staff Counselor in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. She supports UNICEF employees to deal with challenges as they deliver results for children in complex environments.
Laila was born blind. Because of her disability and her gender identity, she brings a diverse perspective to our work. This experience enables UNICEF to be a more responsive and inclusive organization. Inspired by her ability to connect with people, we invited Laila to join a public LIVE discussion and share her story.
We followed Laila for 2 weeks capturing moments in her daily life. We accompanied her as she traveled crossing borders, met with colleagues and friends, went to work. During the trip, we witnessed how she connected with people in diverse communities anywhere she passed by. We recorded her as she explained what motivates her, and how she approaches life.
