Highlights

In 2023, children faced crises around the world. Indeed, deadly conflicts, poverty and the climate crisis continued to threaten the lives and well-being of children. Despite these hurdles, there was progress and hope.

It was these challenges and opportunities that drove the UNICEF Innocenti research and foresight agenda throughout 2023. Throughout all our research, foresight and convening, UNICEF Innocenti actively shaped discussions and policies and helped promote the well-being and rights of children worldwide. The State of the World’s Children 2023, for example, earned record attention from viewers and media, fostering global dialogue on immunization. Findings from Report Card 18: Child Poverty in the Midst of Wealth informed national advocacy efforts and sparked debate among policymakers. And Prospects for Children in the Polycrisis: A 2023 Global Outlook garnered dialogue within UNICEF.

As UNICEF Innocenti continues work in 2024, we will focus on three main priorities that will lead us to ask critical questions: How do we make sure every child learns? How do we meaningfully engage with children and young people? How do we secure the best future for children?
