Youth for Climate Action Campaign Programme
Combating Climate Change
I was raised and born in a country where we face most of the time; nothing should stop me from learning how to tackle this issue and the best way to mitigate and adapt. The East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region is one of the most impacted by multiple overlapping climates and environmental shocks and stresses; 41% of children in the region face 5 or more shocks, compared to the global average of 14%.
As a young people, I am acutely aware of climate change's profound impacts on our lives. It affects our health, well-being, education, and, ultimately, our future prospects. That's why I, Erwin Mahendra Eka Saputra, a YPAT UNICEF East Asia and Pacific member, took the initiative to launch the "Youth for Climate Action Programme'' within my organization, SBSM Poltekesos Bandung.
This programme is a comprehensive effort that combines an engaging online campaign with an on-site project centred around tree planting in Sukabumi, West Java. It responds to the urgent need for immediate action and collective efforts to combat climate change. We believe in harnessing the power of children and young people as catalysts for change in their communities.
Our online campaign under the Youth for Climate Action Programme leverages the reach and influence of digital media and social platforms. We provide capacity development for ambassadors, create captivating content, develop educational resources, and facilitate interactive discussions. The goal is to raise awareness among a wide audience and empower young individuals to become agents of change.
But our efforts continue beyond the virtual realm. Our on-site project focuses on planting trees in Sukabumi, West Java. Trees are vital allies in mitigating climate change. They absorb carbon dioxide, reduce air pollution, and support biodiversity. This programme aims to restore and enhance the local ecosystem while allowing youth to actively contribute to climate action.
"I firmly believe that young people possess the power to make a tangible difference in the fight against climate change," I confidently state. "The Youth for Climate Action Programme strives to inspire, educate, and empower young people, transforming them into sustainability leaders within their communities."
Under my leadership, this programme has made a significant impact. Our online campaign has reached over 57,000 people, created 150 climate change Education Information & Communication (EIC) materials, planted 100 trees, and engaged more than 150 children and young people as ambassadors. Moreover, we have fostered collaborations with 40 youth-led organizations. The Youth for Climate Action Programme is a shining example, showcasing children and young people's vital roles in shaping a sustainable future.
