Highlights
Remarkable progress in women’s and children’s health has been achieved in East Asia and the Pacific, but progress has been unequal. Children living in remote, marginalized groups are being left behind. The unfinished agenda in maternal and child health combined with the rise of noncommunicable diseases and climate and pandemic risks requires a focus on strengthening primary health care (PHC).
The Regional Landscape Analysis describes the status of PHC in the region by applying the global PHC operational framework and the strategic and operational levers. The report provides an overview of each country’s PHC policy and strategy. It also identifies the gaps and opportunities for the uptake of the PHC approach including investment in frontline workers, and the adoption of models of care that engage marginalized communities in delivering services. As such, the report provides useful insights for public health practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and UNICEF staff.
The Regional Lanscape Analysis reaffirms the urgent need to transform health systems towards a PHC approach for better health outcomes and achieving universal health coverage.
