This week’s Photo of the Week taken by photographer Giovanni Diffidenti shows 12-year-old Esmaeil (left) and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom sharing a laugh near Esmaeil’s family’s two-room dwelling, in the northern city of Irbid, in Jordan. Esmaeil, his parents and his five siblings are refugees from the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.
The family have exhausted their savings, and none of the children of school-age are in school. Esmaeil who completed the third grade in the Syrian Arab Republic, would like to continue is education, but the nearest school is full, and his family cannot afford the bus fare he needs to attend another school that is relatively close but still some distance away. He, his mother and his two younger siblings attend a UNICEF-supported child and family protection centre in the city. The centre provides educational and recreational activities, skills training, and psychosocial support for Syrian children and families, as well as for vulnerable Jordanians.
Mr. Bloom is visiting the country to draw increased attention to the urgent needs of children and families affected by the continuing Syrian crisis – now in its fourth year. Almost 589, 800 Syrians have fled to Jordan to escape the fighting in their homeland. Syrians have also taken refuge in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey, bringing their total number to some 2.5 million.
